Sylvanvale Catering and Birdcage Café has won the inaugural Sutherland Shire Council Access & Inclusion Award at the 2018 Sutherland Shire Local Business Awards. The Award seeks to recognise the efforts of those organisations and businesses in Sutherland Shire Local Government Area that have made their business inclusive to the whole community.
At Sylvanvale Catering and Birdcage Café, supported employees with intellectual disability work alongside qualified support staff and experienced hospitality and catering staff. The business changes community perceptions and helps people with disability develop skills that increase their chances of gaining employment in the hospitality industry.
The business actively encourages people of all abilities to patron the café and, in 2017, thanks to a Community Building Partnership Program Grant, carried out structural improvements to make the premises more accessible. Profit raised by the business goes back into supporting people with disability to connect with the community.
Sylvanvale is delighted to have won this significant award and to have been recognised for its dedication to creating a society where having a disability is no more remarkable than wearing glasses.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this fantastic achievement possible! Learn more about Sylvanvale Catering here.
