Lorna Stone Development Award Recipients Announced

For the last six years, Sylvanvale has offered an annual scholarship called the ‘Lorna Stone Development Award’. The aim of the award is to encourage education and independence for children and young people with a disability through the provision of services or purchase of equipment.

The award was established by Sylvanvale’s Board of Directors in recognition of the outstanding contribution, leadership and dedication of Mrs Lorna Stone AM. Lorna is a tireless advocate for the rights of children and was the Chairman of Sylvanvale from 1999 until November 2014. The special award is our way of saying thank you to Lorna and continuing her legacy at Sylvanvale.

Since its launch in 2015, 18 children have benefited from the award – receiving over $37,000 in equipment and services.

When the award was first launched, it was open to children aged 0-14 years. In 2020 we expanded it to include individuals aged up to 25 years of age, to give more young people the opportunity to benefit from it.

We are delighted to announce that this year’s recipients are Gabriella Nappa, Jacob Fountain, Liam Bader and Indie Cudmore. They come from a wide range of Sylvanvale services including Loftus Respite, Speech Pathology, Supported Independent Living and Mikarie Child Care Centre.

The award is ordinarily up to a total of $5,000. However, due to the quality of this year’s applications, a special exception was made – and it was increased to $7,211 for 2020. The recipients will receive a range of benefits including therapy sessions, sensory technologies and equipment.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who applied for this year’s award.
