Mikarie Upgrades Mean More Support for Kids with a Disability
Mikarie Child Care Centre is a multi-award winning long day care centre located in Kirrawee. As the only child care centre in the Sutherland Shire that provides early education and quality care to children with and without a disability in the one setting, it is unique. The centre’s Emu Room caters to children with high support needs who often would not be able to attend a mainstream long day care centre or preschool.
Thanks to recent upgrades, there are now more places at Mikarie for children with a disability who require intensive support.
A large part of Mikarie’s front section has been reconfigured to enable the relocation of the Emu Room to a more central, larger space at the centre. This has increased the room’s capacity from six to nine children in the room per day. There is also now hands-free entry into the centre through a new electric door.
The upgrades mean that more children with disability and their families have access unique benefits provided by the Emu Room team. Each day, the team spends a lot of time working with each child on the therapeutic exercises that are necessary to their development – and which their parents would otherwise have to do with them at home in the evenings. Some children progress so much from the early intervention support provided by the Emu Room team that they are able to transition into Mikarie’s mainstream rooms.
Sylvanvale’s Chief Executive Officer, Leanne Fretten, is excited by the benefits the upgrades will bring. “Because of Mikarie Child Care Centre’s upgrades, more families can access a long day care centre that has the expertise to help their children with high support needs to reach their full potential. Families with children with disability are no different to any other family and need flexible childcare arrangements.”
“Research shows that early education programs that are responsive to individual needs and respectful of diversity benefit all children and contribute to building the foundations of an inclusive society.”
