Garden House Now Supplying Produce to Café Y
Our talented team at Garden House is now providing fresh produce to Café Y in Menai!
Café Y is a social enterprise café which supports young people who face disadvantage, with training in hospitality and cooking. All of the café’s profits go back into supporting local young people.
The Sylvanvale / Café Y collaboration originated from a conversation at Caringbah Craft Centre in February, when Garden House Site Manager, Shaun Ferguson, and the Sutherland Shire Council Youth Officer were planning Youth Week.
Things moved quickly and, by the end of March, the team had dedicated garden beds of parsley and rocket – and the produce was adorning Café Y’s plates!
Three months later and much of the fresh produce served at Café Y, including rhubarb, sweet potatoes, beetroot, bay leaf, basil, mint, lemon myrtle, oregano, capsicums, mandarins and cafa limes, is harvested and provided every two weeks from the gardens of Garden House. The produce is then incorporated into Café Y’s delicious menu, including treats such as apple & rhubarb crumble.
Café Y’s Education, Employment and Training Manager, Karen Tsoumbaras, is thrilled with the outcome, “As a social enterprise, our partnerships means the world to us. Working with Sylvanvale is not just cost effective, but highlights collaboration as well as sustainability of the Garden House program Sylvanvale provide for the people they support.”
Big shout out to Sylvanvale’s Garden House for doing great things themselves and supporting our café at the same time.
