Western Sydney University has secured more than $1.6 million through the National Health and Medical Research Council’s MRFF Improving the Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability grant.
Sylvanvale is proud to support an important initiative that will transform preventive health care for people with intellectual disability.
This project aims to:
- Improve understanding and uptake of preventive health care by people with intellectual disability.
- Support access to appropriate health care throughout life.
- Enhance early identification of health issues for better outcomes.
Western Sydney University’s Professor Nathan Wilson from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Translational Health Research Institute (THRI)) and the Australian Centre for Integration of Oral Health (ACIOH), will lead the project.
The project will focus on designing, implementing, and evaluating a preventative oral health education program for disability support workers. Outcomes from the program will be measured to determine the positive effect it may have on the oral health of people living with intellectual disability.
While support will evolve over the course of the project, Sylvanvale will facilitate connection with disability support workers and provide opportunities for the people we support to take part in the research.
Sylvanvale joins a strong network of partners across Australia and internationally, including universities, health organisations, and disability service providers. Together, we are committed to creating lasting change and ensuring people with intellectual disability receive the care they deserve.
We are honoured to contribute to this collaborative effort and look forward to seeing the positive impact this research will have on the lives of people with intellectual disability.
University partners include University of Western Australia, Deakin University, Australian National University, La Trobe University, University of Notre Dame, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), and Ghent (Belgium). Disability service partners include Northcott, Aruma, Greystanes, NADO, and NWDS. Other partners are Summer Hill Media, Seniors Dental Care Australia, Smilo.ai, and NSW Health.
