Understanding The NDIS Changes

The NDIS is undergoing significant reform, with changes being rolled out progressively between 2026 and 2028. These reforms are being introduced by the Australian Government and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and will impact how some supports are funded, how plans are developed and reviewed, and how participants engage with the NDIS.

At Sylvanvale, we understand these changes may create uncertainty for the people we support, families and plan nominees. That’s why we’ve created this NDIS Reforms Hub as a central place for information, updates, resources and guidance.

While some elements of the reforms are now in place, many details are still emerging. We are actively monitoring developments, engaging with sector partners and seeking clarification as new information becomes available. Our commitment is to provide clear, practical information and help people navigate these changes with confidence.

What's Changing Right Now?

From 1 October 2026, changes to funding for some NDIS supports began to be applied when participant plans are created or reassessed. From 1 February 2027, these changes will also apply when plans are renewed.

The changes affect two support category budgets (Not all supports within these categories are affected):

Social, Economic and Community Participation 50% reductions

Improved Daily Living Skills 10% reductions

The NDIA has advised that supports relating to employment, disability-related health supports, high intensity supports and intensive and complex behaviour supports are excluded from the reductions. Essential day-to-day supports such as personal care, eating and drinking assistance, medication supports and nursing supports are also not affected.

What Does This Mean For Me?

Every NDIS plan is different, so the impact will vary from person to person.

Some participants may see little or no change to the supports they currently receive. Others may notice changes when their plan is renewed or reassessed.

If your NDIS plan is due for renewal or reassessment, now is a good time to start preparing and gathering information that demonstrates your support needs, goals and circumstances.
