True friendship is a special thing to witness. It is infectious and helps to lift the mood of everyone it touches.
This International Day of Friendship, we celebrate the beautiful bonds shared by our clients living in Sylvanvale’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) home in Barden Ridge. These friendships reflect the values recognised by the United Nations: that friendship between individuals and communities can inspire peace, foster inclusion, and build bridges across cultures and experiences.
A home woven with connection
It was Dionne Warwick, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder who sang, “For good times and bad times, I’ll be on your side forevermore. That’s what friends are for.” But it’s Anne, Jen, Lorraine, Louise, Cathy, and Lisa who truly embody this kind of enduring friendship.
These six women lived together in Barden Ridge for many years, forming connections that are rare and deeply meaningful. Anne and Jen first moved in together almost 15 years ago, with Lisa joining in 2016. Lorraine and Cathy moved in shortly after Lisa, and the final piece of the puzzle, Louise, joined in 2019.
The friendships that blossomed are beautifully interwoven like the many strands of a crocheted blanket. Anne and Lisa quickly became best friends, sharing a deep and genuine bond. Jen and Louise also formed a close friendship, while Lisa and Cathy had a fun, mischievous relationship, always joking and bouncing off each other.
This year brought sadness to the home, with the passing of both Lisa and Cathy. Their absence is deeply felt, but the friendships they helped build remain strong and cherished.
Celebrating life, together
Birthdays and Christmas are the ladies’ favourite times of year. With support from staff, who assist Anne, Jen, Lorraine, and Louise in their daily lives, the house is transformed for celebrations, filling the space with music, dancing, games, and baking. Everyone gets involved in decorating and preparing treats, and they love inviting friends and family to join the festivities.
But it’s not just the big occasions that bring joy. On quieter days, when they’re not out participating in social and community day programs, the ladies enjoy dancing, listening to music, playing games, and hosting movie nights. Their favourites? Musicals like Grease, Mary Poppins, Oliver, and Mamma Mia.
They’re often seen holding hands, sharing cuddles, and supporting each other through both good times and bad, all of which showcase the profound impact that true friendship can have on connection, inclusion, and shared joy. And at Sylvanvale, we’re proud to support environments where friendships like these can flourish.
