Understanding the NDIS Changes: What They Mean for You

In August, the Australian Government passed the Securing the NDIS for Future Generations Bill 2026 following extensive consultation with people with disability, families, carers and the broader disability community.

It is important to understand that these changes will not happen all at once. They will be introduced gradually over the next few years to help ensure a smooth transition and give participants, families and providers time to adapt.

The first stage of changes will begin on 27 August 2026 and includes:

  • Changes to unscheduled plan reassessments. Only NDIS participants, plan nominees or child representatives will be able to request a reassessment. The government will have 90 days to respond to a request.
  • New record-keeping requirements:
    • NDIS participants will need to keep records for three years.
    • Plan nominees will need to keep records for five years.
    • Providers will need to keep records for seven years.
  • Increased powers to address fraud and non-compliance.
  • A new power for the Minister for Disability to make determinations on how funding is allocated and controlled. While there will be no immediate changes to NDIS pricing as a result of this measure. From 1 October 2026 there is expected to be impacts on both social, Civic and Community Participation and Capacity-building supports, with reductions to be expected. We will communicate more on this important issue shortly.
  • Greater use of automated administrative processes, including claims and payment processing.

Additional changes will be introduced progressively between October 2026 and July 2028, when the full legislation is expected to be in effect.
